What would Rob Nagle do?

He’d seriously reconsider his tumblr account, that’s for sure. I mean, what’s it all about anyway?

I have read some interesting content, but still. It’s like I’m not quite getting it yet. And certainly my blogs don’t seem to be adding to the mix. They don’t even quite fit in. Course, that’s my fault. I’ve got no overarching goal or theme.

Anyway, I’ve got this midterm paper I’ve got to put together, that and a shorter assignment, both due tomorrow night. Then I’ll be off for Spring Break, which seems longer this year, not sure why.

I’ve been trying to book a flight back to the east coast to see the family, just not able to find the right price yet. I will try again next week, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll put the whole trip off all together. I’m trying to get the financial house in order, and if I can’t afford a trip, I can’t afford a trip, that’s all there is to it.

Anyway, it was a nice, chill weekend. Rainy, most of the time. Today seems nice, it will be a nice chance to get some food shopping done for the week. I guess I should hit the gym, then the supermarket, then walgreens, and I’ll be stocked food wise and have gotten a trip to the gym in. Then, hopefully before the night is over, I’ll have finished my homework, too.

Anyway, back to the weekend. Stayed in Friday, relaxed. Saturday morning, went back to my old hood for breakfast at Eddie’s, love that place. Got me some pancakes and sausage, nice family runs the joint. They still remember me after all these years. Wish I took my family there when they were out visiting. Stopped in and saw my friend Kelly Ann who lives across the street from there. Asked her before if she wanted to join me for breakfast but she’d already eaten, there too, as it turns out. She ate with her ex-boyfriend, Tim. I saw Tim and Alex, both of the Pine Box Boys, packing the van for their next show in McKinnleyville, was last night. Didn’t say hi or anything, they looked busy and there was a lot of traffic on the sidewalk and I was hungry.

Then I headed home after visiting with Kelly Ann and got some shit done around the house. Was a semiproductive day. Later, I was reading an email from a san francisco blog called The Bold Italic, it introduced me to a new bar in the Tenderloin called 441 Club. Fancy cocktails at dive bar prices and atmosphere. Sounded good to me. So I called up my homeboy and drinking partner Jeff and suggested we go check it out.

He was a little put off by a trip out beyond our neighborhood zones in pretty much a torrential downfall condition, which I can’t say I blamed him. I was really wondering why I wanted to go out in a torrential rainfall situation myself. But we did, and it was a good time, really dug the place. We did get soaked on the way there, but we got a good seat at the end of the bar where there happened to be a heat lamp on behind us. By the time we left, my coat was completely dried. Who could ask for anything more?

And the bartender, Jessi I believe was her name, not sure how she spells it though. And boy was she cute, very cool, too. She had these late 70s, early 80s glasses on and really short curly hair, which I wouldn’t have thought I’d find attractive, but I did. Wish I had asked her out or something. But I didn’t.

Anyway, I let my friend Kelly Ann know we were going over there, so she joined us at one point, and we all got pretty drunk. Recently, just as sort of a lark and why not thing, the two of us hooked up. A sort of “everybody needs their needs takin care of every now and then” sort of thing. Which was fine, and fun, and generally no awkwardness afterward, but now I feel it’s a thing that she’d like to continue with some regularity and I’m not really into that.

We all took a cab home from the club and she insisted on getting out at my stop. I had to have it out with her a bit saying I wasn’t interested in hanging anymore, was tired and all that, and that I didn’t want to continue with the casual encounters, mainly because I just want things to remain cool on the friend level. I have a feeling if she’d have her druthers it would be a friend thing until she decided differently and will have insinuated herself into my life. I like her, and she’s a good friend, but I just can’t have that kind of relationship with her. Guess it was my mistake as well for hooking up in the first place. Geez, I tell ya.

Anyway, I was able to convince her to go home, so that was good. Then I could chill a bit before hitting the sack myself. And here I am on Sunday, plotting my next moves for the day.

What would Rob Nagle do?

Well, the weekend is here and that is exactly what I’m trying to figure out, what would I do this weekend?

I’ve already made a list, so i have an idea. The things on the list are not so much fun, though. But I reckon I have enough fun in general.

First thing on the list, the cat boxes. Now, I have three cats, and because of that I have two boxes. Three would probably be better, but I just don’t have the room for them. I fill each box with two bags of litter and I have to scoop them at least every other day or two or the cats will make me pay for it. Friggin cats. Don’t even get me started!

The boxes are good for about two weeks that way. It’s a big, dirty job, and I’m the only one who can do it, so … that will be first.

I’m on my last cup of coffee so it won’t be long before I get started. Part of my routine on days off is drinking coffee all morning while surfing the Internet, reading news and such.

I’m getting more and more bored of that these days. I guess because it’s also a big part of my job. That and sites like Facebook and Twitter are becoming more everyday. Part of the reason I started this blog, to see what tumblr was about and see what other interesting things I might find on here.

One is the future journalism project, been following them. As a web editor, I’m finding that to be good, I’ve got a couple good ideas from them today already, that I hope to bring back to the web team at work next week. Yesterday was a huge day for the website, mostly because of national news sites and programs making such a big deal out of the “tsunami” that hit the California coast yesterday before we here on the West Coast really got started covering it.

Some people, our publisher included, thought we were making too big a deal out of it. And I suppose to a degree that is true, but it was already a big deal before we went big with it and we would look bad to have downplayed it. Sometimes, in the media, you just can’t win. It’s no secret that the media overplays most things and the rest of us just try to keep up with the Jones’ but that is how it is. I wish it was different.

In fact, I have an idea for a website that would be different. It’s just a nugget of a kernel of an idea and I think it could be fun and prosperous. But there are so many other things a man has to concentrate on in daily life that it will be hard to see this idea to fruition, we’ll see though.

Last night I didn’t do too much after work. Poured myself a gin on the rocks and listened to some loud music. Smoked a little weed, too. It was nice, actually. Ultimately I fell asleep on my couch and woke up at midnight. Saw I had missed a call from a friend around 9:30pm and just decided to call it a night anyway. So, I’m up early today, which is good in terms of tackling this list I wrote about.

Anyway, I guess I’ll get on with it.

Worth Ten Life Times In The Penitentiary!

This is where I’m going tonight. Meeting some reporters from work. When this picture was taken, it had different owners. This will be my first time there since the new people took it over.
It’s a pretty cool place, has (or had) a real old-timey feel. Let’s see what the new people have done with it.

Are you a lizard?

I’m just listening to this as I’m browsing my regular websites, a friend posted it on Facebook. Louis CK is a pretty funny dude. A very good friend of mine, Jeff Edwards, likes to joke about the so-called lizard people.

Listen to it, don’t, I don’t give a fuck. Just telling you what I’m doing.

Well, as I’ve said before, I’m switching to left-hand mousing, and that’s working out OK, did it all day at work today and it didn’t really slow me down at all. However, my right arm is feeling even more irritated than ever. Geez Louise, what’s a homeboy to do?

Eh, shizzle.

Is it typing? I’m writing a lot lately, but not more than usual. I just don’t get it.

Anyway, what with getting the basically “employee of the month” award, I got a gift card and my first purchase with said gift card … Johnny Walker Black and a pack of Winston Lights, hello! Still, even though it’s more expensive and, er, premiumer, I like the red better.

I reckon I’ll have to go to the doctor about my arm. And, I’m pretty sure I know what they’re going to say:

“Yes, you have blah diddee blah, and there’s nothing that can be done about it. We can give you something. If you want.”

And then I’ll say to myself, as I’ve tentatively said already, “I guess it’s just another thing to get used to.” Which is to say, what the fuck ever.

Anyway, back to lizards. The idea behind the lizard people is that there is a cabal, c’mon, you’ve heard this before, that controls this that and the other thing. And listening to Mr. Rumsfeld and his story about his age and how long he’s been in government, you might think, “that motherfucker is some kind of lizard!”

He’s been in the government since god damned Eisenhower, and when I say that, I don’t mean to damn Eisenhower, he’s the most sensible Republican we’ve had since Lincoln, as far as I can tell, but Rummy’s 78 years old and he sounds vital as ever. Now, I understand the so-called complications of government and foreign relations that he speaks about, to a degree, and American involvement and participation in such, however, here he is, hawking a book (great to use hawking when talking about Rummy, right?) at 78 and he’s still on. I gotta tell you, like the title of his book, something to do with known knowns and all that shit, when he had that speech about “known knowns” I thought it was political genius. Whether I agree about what he said he knew or didn’t know or what and what for.

Anyway, because of such things, accomplishments and such, years in service, etc. the man’s labelled a lizard, like everyone else in power, beholden to mysterious behind the scene powers. Which I think is malarky. Dude was into getting into government at a young age, most that are recognize the inherent opportunism that you have to embrace to have a career in such and go on doing their own thing, ideologically only to a degree, but also go on in such fashion as was started from the person who held office before them. Particularly in presidential politics that is a prominent feature.

If you look at it, that’s what happens, presidents start something that is inherently carried on with the next president. I don’t know exactly what that’s all about but it has helped color and define our foreign and domestic policy time and time again.

Shit, I know what its about. But it ain’t no cabal, lizard, ethnic or otherwise.

Bananas.

You know, Jim Morrison was the lizard king, right?

It’s not always about do

What up?

Yeah man, it’s Thursday, I can feel the weekend comin’ on. Had some Bucca de Beppo at work before I left today, that is some good shit. Chicken Carbonara, yum! We have this feel-good meeting once a month to show some appreciation to us underlings, which is actually nice, btw. Speaking of which, today, I was recognized for doing a good job. How’s about that? I must be doing something wrong.

Also, moved to a new spot in the office, as of end of the day. I’ll be sitting next to Mike Aldax, ace reporter, who I work closely with in the early hours of the day. It’ll be a lot easier to communicate now that we’re closer. Always nice to have a change of scenery, too. I will miss my old cubicle neighbors though, we like to riff and chat. But they won’t be so far away.

Also, I’m switching to left-hand mousing from now on. Already have done it here at home, but work is the more important switch. I feel the symptoms of carpal tunnel comin’ on me right hand, wrist and arm and I don’t like it. But at me job, I use the mouse and my right hand so much, I just figured I had to switch. It will definitely be an adjustment, but I think I’ll be able to deal with it. I may have to learn a few more keystroke shortcuts, too. Sometimes, you need to force a change on yourself.

Well, it’s raining here in San Francisco. Supposed to get cold this weekend, too. So cold, in fact, that we might, just might, see snow in downtown San Francisco. We’ll see about that.

Was just chattin’ with my homeboy Brian Liou, who lives in China now, works for a state-run newspaper there, of all things! But seriously, today, with the Internet, it really is a luxury we probably take for granted how easy a guy in San Francisco can chat with a guy in China all while sitting in front of his computer. The future man, the mother fuckin’ future.
